Every Summer the Santa Barbara-Goleta, Santa Maria, and Lompoc-VAFB Branches of AAUW get together for a Social Fundraiser Event.  The past several years we have selected Theater Events at the Solvang Theaterfest, PCPA Productions.  This year we were treated to a magical evening of theater, as NEWSIES has just come off National Tour and was released to a limited number of Regional Professional Theater Companies, PCPA being our local Professional Regional Company in Santa Maria and Solvang.  57 Guests gathered in the Garden Area to partake of a picnic feast of sandwiches, deviled eggs, cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, with an extra special batch of desserts and wines.  Conversation flows easily among friends.

We interrupted them, periodically, to introduce Actors from the show, as the Director and Choreographer, and the Artistic Director for PCPA joined us to share their insights about the show.  PCPA’s production of Disney’s NEWSIES, the Musical, based on the Disney film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, and originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions, with Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Jack Feldman, and Book by Harvey Fierstein, is “the story of a band of underdogs who took on the most powerful names in New York in a fight for what’s right.  Inspired by a triumphant true story, NEWSIES leaps off the stage with soul stirring music, amazing heart, and stunning choreography.  Now is the time to seize the day and discover the remarkable strength that comes from standing together – one for all and all for one.”  A most timely show, Mark Booher, Artistic Director, shared his excitement to bring this to the Santa Maria and Solvang communities, with very special choreography by Michael Jenkinson, who also directed this show, his last production with PCPA after a 10 yr partnership journey, from student to choreographer, director, and teacher extraordinaire.   Our members and guests were treated to an extra special moment after the show as Mark Booher, cast, and crew all honored Michael Jenkinson for his 10 yrs of service and creation with PCPA.

These evenings allow our members and guests to gather, share, visit, and enjoy the company of others, while helping to raise funds, often for the Tech Trek Programs that our branches support.
