2013 Tech Trek Reception
Tech Trek is a very special commitment for our Santa Maria Branch. Tech Trek is a weeklong summer camp for rising eighth-grade girls that is designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in STEM through classes, workshops, hands-on activities, and field trips. Tech Trek started in 1998 with one site in California and has expanded to eight college campuses across the state. In summer 2011, Tech Trek was even featured on CBS Evening News. Our Branch has been sending girls since the inception of the program. They go to the UCSB Campus now where Campers are exposed to daytime and evening programs in fields such as astronomy, engineering, chemistry, marine biology, and environmental studies to enhance the learning experience and introduce students to a variety of potential career areas. The Program is designed around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), encouraging and supporting girls as they enter upper middle and high school as they prepare to enter college.
All Tech Trek girls and their families were invited to meet our membership and to learn more about camp from past campers. As there is no general meeting in June this event is our main June activity. Several members came to meet these outstanding girls. Because of your generous support we are sending six girls!!!
